Electric Vehicles, or EVs, have made a grand entrance into the market in recent years. EVs are now...
Heart Attacks and Lottery Wins - The life of a founder
Being a founder is not an easy ride. It's a roller coaster ride with a lot of ups and downs, and many times, you need to hold onto your seatbelt tight to make it through. As a founder, you experience a mix of emotions - excitement, fear, pride, and even despair. The journey can be brutal, and it's not for the faint of heart. Every assumption I made was wrong, but I wouldn't trade any of it for the world.
Our start-up company has recently achieved significant milestones, pushing us to the brink of securing a $1 million seed funding round. We have made gains in our product development like never before, and it resonates strongly with our clients, making our pitch meetings successful. Our problem-solving capabilities have increased dramatically, allowing us to cater to specific client requests, such as developing an add-on for buyers to reduce obsolescence. Despite this progress, the financial management aspect remains challenging, especially since I left my day job earlier than planned. Over the last 18 months, the sight of our bank account has been daunting. Thankfully, our network, including former colleagues, customers, and fellow alumni from Stephen F. Austin University, has been instrumental in supporting us. Juggling personal finances with business expenses and employee payrolls can be dispiriting, and the constant anticipation of payments can be mentally draining.
They don't often speak about the relentless financial undertow that comes with spearheading a startup. Every victory, every product breakthrough, and even personal milestones are overshadowed by the constant worry about finances. In hindsight, I would have given my all to mastering the financial nuances of running a startup. Even the most basic understanding, such as crafting a compelling pitch, can revolutionize your game. Sales and marketing leaders might believe they've mastered the art of presentation and value propositions; however, the skill of creating an effective investor pitch deck is a different ballpark altogether. This knowledge not only improves your client and vendor interactions but also takes your business to new heights. Gaining this wisdom was a game-changing moment for me, but oh, how I wish I had this insight from the get-go.
The old adage, "Do what you love, and you'll never work a day in your life," isn't completely accurate, yet there's a grain of truth in it. When you pour your heart into something you've crafted, it's almost impossible not to develop a profound affection for it. I'm privileged to have a natural enthusiasm that infuses my speech, even if it's not always deeply felt. As a salesman, I'm adept at toggling this drive on and off. Yet, when it comes to our products, my emotions run deep for the first time. We might not be eradicating world hunger just yet, but we're offering tools that can prevent costly errors, saving our clients, who are predominantly in the EV and renewable energy sectors, millions. In doing so, we're making our little contribution towards a greener earth. It's breathtaking how often I find myself emotionally stirred or goosebump-ridden during my workday. I've never been moved to tears during a product launch at my previous jobs; this journey has genuinely been the most fulfilling experience of my life.
Ultimately, the essence of our journey is the pursuit of equilibrium, so tread lightly before diving into the uncharted territories of entrepreneurship. Those blessed with the spark of imagination - be they humorists, artists, or innovators - are frequently burdened by the very same gifts. The euphoric highs of creativity often yield our most brilliant concepts, but for an entrepreneur like myself, these peaks are accompanied by a steep descent back to the harsh reality. My primary duty is to stay grounded in my household; only then can I let my creativity soar into the vast skies of invention! Pardon the impassioned outpouring, but I'm relishing in this moment of contentment today!
